Autumn return

“For this I bless you most:
You give much and know not that you give
  at all.”
~ Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet (1923)

A metro ride to her childhood friend’s flat
Brings discussion of plans for this rare occasion
It’s a schoolday
Why not go greet our old teachers
Just after hours
If any remain
The other rolls her eyes
Why go back there
Didn’t you get enough of them
Nonetheless the two proceed
Passing through the Sveeblova backstreets
Passing the tired high-rises
Passing the threshold
Of School 1138
Of old rooms become conspicuously less than reminiscent
Of any American institution
No gaudy mobiles cutesy learning centers sleepy aquaria
Just bare essentials
Like an old woman’s warm greeting
Wistful face and scuffed room the same as years before
But with the passage of time
Bearing witness that learning’s not entertainment
Just humanity
