Back

“Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose.”
~ Kris Kristofferson, “Me and Bobby McGee” (1969)

The X-rays showed the awful truth
I’d broken it all right
Not only now but in my youth
Twice! (and more brought to light)

The doctor covered for them, said:
“We often don’t recall
Hard times”, and frowned. I smiled instead:
“Well, sure, I was too small”

Somehow I’d made it through the school
Big books in a big stack
That wasn’t centered — it’s not cool —
But lugged with one strap slack

Somehow I’d made it through the work
Where disability
Insurance is made by some jerk
To look like it’s for free

The calculation’s too complex
To show the awful truth
Within the time this tool expects
Enrolling bone and tooth

For loved ones’ chances in this land
Built on abuse and fraud
Those trained to watch their backs can stand
This nation under God
