Bubble

“Not sure if I’m stuck inside
  My own metaphor”
~ Animal Liberation Orchestra, “Plastic Bubble” from the album Roses & Clover (2007)

How convenient the media barrage
That steals the magic from a young boy’s lonely soul
How convenient the crass conservatism
That scandalizes alternative ways
How convenient the useless research into a touted oncovirus
That affects neither labrats nor monkeys nor until now, we’re told, humans
How convenient the labels
That make everything old new again

How convenient the big pharma industry
That ramps up production in an eyeblink
How convenient the shocking concept
That chases a generation deeper into its bubbles
How convenient the insider politics
That subsidizes meds for presumed perverts
How convenient the labels
That concoct communicable disease from lifestyle

How convenient the fear
That thwarts passion’s flare
How convenient the global committees
That reinvent causes of death amongst faraway underprivileged peoples
How convenient the crowd’s trusting complacency
That denies the lack of evidence
How convenient the labels
That mutate harmless HTLV-3 into a three-letter sentence

How convenient the media barrage
That steals the magic from a sports star’s lonely soul
How convenient the endless flood of research money
That appeases scientists’ questions
How convenient the religious dogma
That ensures everyone of God’s plan
How convenient the labels
That let a few cynics play God
