Cat’s tail

“I consulted all the rulebooks
  My structure was intact
  I used my dictionary
  My rhymes were all exact”
~ Carla Ulbrich, “Nothing to Say” from the album Her Fabulous Debut (1999)

Of what worth — to what avail
Centuries of education
Lifetimes of exploration
Ages of spiritual search
Teachings of schools and church
Collected wisdom of communities
Local opportunities
Swamped by culture’s extradition
Drowned in witless television
Submerged beneath talk radio
Soaked by fossil fuel in vivo
Swimming in the sea of cheap junk
Plugging gyres, yet what’s sunk
The wealth of energy invested
Turned upon itself, congested
Through human endeavor, struggle
Time of stress, no time to snuggle
All chopped
Coolly dropped
And left under the cat’s tail?
