China

“It still amazes me that I can make myself deliriously happy and then utterly miserable,
when nothing is going on except various states of inner awareness”
~ Amy Devereaux, Ralph Nader Will You Marry Me, p. 86, Initiation Publications (1988)

If he understands the irony
Of how he found himself in this bizarre place
Of transparent objects meeting horns
Of skittish toss of troubled head
Of vitreous shards beneath uncertain hooves
If he understands the meaning
Of shattering sounds accosting sensitive ears
Of shrill exclamations
Of the other occupant of these clangorous crunchy confines
Of deferential pursuit clear to familiar plain
Of first light breaking over placid ruminations
Of his fading face watching not unkindly from the December sky
If he understands the value
Of what painstaking care was left in ruin
Of thankful return
Of service for four
Of capital
Of pride loss romance guests steaks
If he understands the experience
As fodder for the imagination
As painfully regrettable
As an ordeal best forgotten
He’ll never tell
