Cracks

“To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.”
    ~ Søren Kierkegaard

I can see you
Slipping downward
Dissipating amongst the cracks
Between the floorboards
Sanguine as Chernobyl in slow motion
And just as atomized

I’m here with you
Like the wake you gratefully leave behind
Long after the bearers’ job has ended
And animal and plant essences have joined
Amongst knot and tongue and groove
That coldly squeak beneath soft paws

As part of you
Entangled from the beginning
I can’t be separated out
Whether we scatter or reform
The shape we once had
Will never be again

I support you
Form the fiber the cellulose the structure
In which you’re embedded
Suffocating smoothly as the rayon
That could have been extruded striated from this substrate
Had you chosen to warm and comfort

I’m borne by you
At once integrated with you in the planking
And padding sliding pouncing bandy-legged atop
Nubby flappy tongue hanging out
Dripping with delight
Moistening your seasoned finished pores
