“Il est bien malaisé (puisqu’il faut enfin m’expliquer) d’ôter à des insensés des chaînes qu’ils révèrent.”
“It’s difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.”
~ Voltaire, Le dîner du comte de Boulainvilliers (1767): Troisième Entretien

As I asked
About her illness
Neither of us knew
Then the depth of my blunder

As she flashed
That irate grimace
Then cried out
That it was a lie

As she rejected
First the concept
Then the stigma
Then nothing

As she accepted
First the sympathy
Then the charity
Then the power

As she voraciously
Consumed handouts
Coming from all sources
First the family
Then the church
Then the temple

As she trespassed
With full indemnity
At home in all places
First the snotty gathering
Then the private drive
Then the snazzy new condo

As she overcame
With increasing delight
In all exploits
First the manners
Then the dignity
Then the law

As I tell her
How wrong I was
Both of us know
I’m too late

As the authorities yet again
Drag her
To utter freedom
Hold yourself back

As she begs yet again
With increasing
Histrionic fervor
First the big puppy eyes
Then the trembling
Then the crocodile tears

As she hires attorneys
With your money
You’ll be sure
To lose the rest
