I don’t know

“I just wish I was made of wood
I might not feel pain, even if I should”
~ Black, aka Colin Vearncombe, “Sweetest Smile” from the album Wonderful Life (1987)

I don’t know just where
I left my heart
Should a land captivate
Not of this world
Should a golden age inspire
Never having arrived
Should I long to touch a face
Hardly knowing the person who gazes from it
Other than in dreams
There’s a clue
In a scent of early autumn
In a shaft of light at sunset
In the street at the sound of a tune
Seemingly familiar till the moment
I don’t know just where
I might ever have come to know it
