Laughter, part one

“When the wise hear of Tao, they diligently practice it
When the average hear of Tao, they take it or leave it
When the foolish hear of Tao, they laugh out loud
Without that laughter, it wouldn’t be Tao”
~ Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, chapter 41

If you’re white in this town
You’re from one of two sides
Of the track
She wasn’t from the snobbish side
She also wasn’t rubbish
Her clothes may have been second hand
But they were neat
She looked maybe even elegant
As she walked over each day
From the clarinet section
During warmup
I hardly knew what we might discuss
That might interest her
Why would she care
About science fantasy philosophy humanity
Infinity
Maybe music would do
Since she played an instrument
Mostly I let her do the talking
Till she handed me her senior photo
Which I carried that day
And took back to that place
That for lack of a better word
Was home
And pulled it out again
Never had I handed over anything else
That resulted in such mirth
“Look, oh my
  She’s plucked her eyebrows
  All out”
On closer inspection I saw it was true
They were carefully drawn on
As if on the photo itself
What a thing to have done
I was glad I’d made her laugh
He never said a word
