Phony

“What’s clearest seems like muddiness
  What’s truest seems like falseness
  What’s mildest seems like roughness
  What’s loftiest seems like lowness”
~ Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, chapter 41

The nation is impressive
And sure seems free
Its weapons polished up so
None ethically question them
Let alone their purpose

The physics is impressive
And sure seems elegant
Its dimensions curled up so
None admiringly envision them
Let alone show evidence

The medicine is impressive
And sure seems curative
Its effects hazing up so
None safely combine them
Let alone withdraw

The programming is impressive
And sure seems entertaining
Its hours adding up so
None daringly reclaim them
Let alone switch off

The school is impressive
And sure seems educational
Its books piling up so
None in class actually read them
Or let alone the few readers of classics

The church is impressive
And sure seems righteous
Its edicts straightening up so
None indiscriminately hate
Let alone kill

The humanism is impressive
And sure seems established
Its principles standing up so
None ever changes
Let alone under someone’s influence

The court is impressive
And sure seems impartial
Its loopholes complicating so
None predict an outcome
Let alone collect on one

The management is impressive
And sure seems reasonable
Its layoffs saving up so
None need happen again
Let alone soon

The corporation is impressive
And sure seems thoughtful
Its products greening up so
None worry about toxicity
Let alone the environment

The economy is impressive
And sure seems reliable
Its numbers running up so
None worry about debt
Let alone pay it off

But the poem is unimpressive
And sure seems put on
Its very words acting up so
None abides soporific reflection
Let alone reflects reality
