Somebody

“If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.”
    ~ W. H. Auden, “The More Loving One” (1957)

To realize dreams
To grasp the ungraspable
To peel an onion
Endlessly
There are always more

To realize efficiency
To chase the unchaseable
To accumulate peelings
Indefinitely
There are always more

To realize health
To cleanse what’s not unclean
To accept crying
Thankfully
There’s surely more

To realize quality
To tame what’s not wild
To slough back layer by layer
Gracefully
There’s of course more

To realize self
To break the unbreakable
To meld heart with heart
Joyfully
There are always more

Why resent a peel
Coming off together with fresh soil
Any more than the dust
Coming off a sculpture in progress
Whose face
Ever refinable with love
Belongs to somebody
Who’ll be perfectly revealed
At the end of time
With all the dross at last
Out of the way
Some distant divinity
Somebody memorable
Or me —
Others may seek an answer
I find in myself
When I envision the onion
Love it
Embrace it
Become it
Only to discover
It’s all peeled away
