“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.”
~ Bob Marley, “Redemption Song” from the album Uprising (1979)

If those lauding education
Are unable to change spark plugs
If not build a motor
Can their talk of learning be more than ramblings of the ignorant?

If those standing for patriotism
Are reaping the rewards of cash and bennies
If not political power
Can their talk of country be more than the price of a flag?

If those praising marriage and relationships
Are living in disconnection from those in their own households
If not altogether alone
Can their talk of values and family be more than vain prayer?

If those undulating the body or studying the mirror
Are coolly fearful of entanglement
If not frigid
Can their suggestion of intimacy be more than masturbation?

If those pushing religion
Are getting away with hidden sin
If not just in their hearts
Can their talk of faith be more than a joke at God’s expense?

If those claiming scientific solutions
Are paid in recognition
If not profitable career opportunities
Can their talk of empiricism be more than scientifically invalid?

If those claiming freedom
Are espousing other people’s ideas
If not cribbing their entire lifestyles
Can their talk of liberty be more than the chained animal’s wistful cry?
