Values

“Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.”
    ~ Max Ehrmann, “Desiderata” (1927)

I didn’t enter the rabbit hole
Until I was dragged down it kicking and screaming
Curious though it was
That’s how I learned to value liberty

I didn’t realize every player’s a card
Until I’d been endlessly played out
To the delight of every hatter and hare shuttling ’round the table
That’s how I learned appearances deceive

I didn’t understand the point of struggle
Until some Tweedles made it vacuously clear
And struggle as I may
That’s how I learned to let go

I didn’t comprehend reality
Until I saw empty space grinning
Whether with me or at me I couldn’t say yet
That’s how I learned guidance is everywhere

I didn’t think others were like me
Until nothing changed on the way out of Wonderland
That’s how I learned the senselessness of hope
And the pointlessness of liberty

I didn’t know life had meaning
Until I realized Alice, with her natural compassion for all creatures, is me
That’s how I learned the value of curiosity
And of rabbit holes
